Thank you so much for stopping by the classroom blog!  I will be briefly recapping what we have done during the week specifically in Room 223 as a part of my student teaching (for 4th grade math and science, please consult the weekly newsletter).

Literacy:

We finished up our Sharon Creech books, Granny Torelli Makes Soup, Walk Two Moons, Ruby Holler, and The Wanderer.  Everyone loved her writing style and we got a lot of practice making inferences.

We began our Reader's Theater scripts last week.  Reader's Theater consists of reading through a short play or a portion of a larger play with a small group to practice our fluency and expression.  The four scripts we will be working on are: The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The BFG, The Librarian From the Black Lagoon, and The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything.  Be sure to ask your child which part they have, but they do not need to memorize their lines.  Just practice for their fluency and expression :-)

We are still working on our realistic fiction stories.  Right now most students are editing and revising.  We're so excited to see them coming along so nicely!

5th Grade Math:

We started our fractions unit two weeks ago.  To kick it off, we did a fun project in which we created our own "Fraction Friend" with different colored squares.  When students finished, they counted how many total squares they used and that was their denominator.  Then they counted how many of each individual color they used and created a key with the corresponding fractions.

We are also learning about equivalent fractions so students played "Fraction Match".  This is a card game much like a memory card game in which pairs must be equivalent fractions.  Everyone had a great time playing!

Social Studies:

We started our U.S. History Timeline project.  Each student or pair of students is assigned one time period in U.S. history and is responsible for creating a timeline.  At the end of the project, students will present their time period to the class!  Students are encouraged to do research outside of school as well as print pictures to put on their poster.  Thank you to everyone who sent in art supplies and poster board.  It is very much appreciated!

Extra:

We had a really fun Friendship Party last week!  There was plenty of sweet and salty snack mix to go around and a fun game called, "Hello Mr. Judge" that was hilarious.

Every class in the school is creating a Dr. Seuss book cover poster for our Dr. Seuss day next Friday.  We chose to do One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  Our poster committee did a phenomenal job!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Sincerely,
Ms. Koeble
