Week of March 12th, 2012

Happy Friday!
Hope everyone had a fantastic week.

I posted at the end of the blog last week that I am hoping to attend some of the students' extra curricular functions.  Feel free to send me any dates or schedules for anything your student may be participating in before the end of the school year!  I am excited to see Kayla Irish dance this Saturday!

Without further ado, here is our weekly recap:

Literacy:

Word Study:
This week we are working on contractions.  They are trickier than they look!

Writing:
We started our poetry unit this week!  We started out with doing a group alphabet poem.  Each student was assigned a letter and they came up with a sentence starting with that letter and illustrated it.  We will be hanging it up in the hall in alphabetical order.  It was a fun and simple way to start our unit.

We also wrote limerick poems.  These were a bit more challenging because they required a certain type of rhythm and rhyming scheme.  Students have been handling it really well and some of them are really funny!

Reading:
We started our mystery genre book clubs this week.  Students are either reading The Westing Game, From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Who Stole the Wizard of Oz, or Encyclopedia Brown.  We are working on either making predictions or making inferences.

Math:
We continued to work on computing fractions.  It is a really difficult concept to understand so we took a few days to practice.  We are now learning about decimals as a segue way into our money unit.

Social Studies:
We are now working on our final U.S. history time line posters.  They are turning out great!  We are excited to share them with each other the week before Spring Break!

Extra:

We celebrated Aidan's birthday this week.  Thanks for the yummy cupcake cake!

See you at the dance tonight if you're going!
