Week of April 16th, 2012

Happy Friday!
I hope you had a fantastic week!

As always...

Reminder: I am hoping to attend some of the students' extra curricular functions.  Feel free to send me any dates or schedules for anything your student may be participating in before the end of the school year!

Now, without further ado...

Literacy

Writing:
We finished up writing our last poem this week called a “Diamonte Poem”.  These consisted of choose two opposite nouns and writing the first half about the first noun and the second half about the second noun.  Students also included alliteration and onomatopoeia in these poems.  It was a great review on the definitions of nouns, adjectives, and verbs.  We will each be reading 1-2 of our own original poems for you all at the Poetry Café on April 24th (don’t forget to RSVP)!

Reading:
We continue to work on our fluency while reading our “Joyful Noise” partner poems which you will get to hear at the Poetry Café on April 24th.  Everyone is doing a great job perfecting the difficult parts of reading a poem with more than one voice.

Math:
We continue to work on working with money and started an awesome activity this week where we all won $50,000 in the lottery!  Students were given twelve checks they needed to write out and then balance in their checkbook registers.  This unit has been a great review on working with decimals, subtracting large numbers and learning life-long skills.  Plus, it is never a bad thing to “win” money!

Social Studies:
We continued the Pioneers unit.  This week our pioneers learned how the simulation will work, formed wagon trains, chose family identities, and started selecting the supplies they will bring on the journey.

Have a great week!
